What is balayage?
Balayage is a French hair colouring technique where lightener or colour is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair, rather than applied through foils or a cap. The result is a natural-looking, graduated colour effect — lighter towards the ends — with soft, blended roots that grow out gracefully.
Quick definition
Balayage = freehand painted colour producing a natural, graduated sun-kissed effect
- —No foils — colour is painted directly onto the hair surface
- —Results in softer, blended roots that grow out gradually
- —Duration: 2.5–4+ hours depending on hair length and base colour
- —Premium pricing reflects the time and skill required
How balayage is applied
A hairdresser applies lightener or colour directly to the hair using a brush, working in a sweeping motion from mid-length to tips. Unlike foil highlights, balayage is not separated into precise sections — the freehand technique creates variation in tone that mimics the way hair naturally lightens in sunlight. The lightener sits on the hair open to air rather than enclosed in foil, which produces softer, less intense results.
- —No foils needed — colour is painted directly onto the hair
- —Produces natural-looking, blended colour rather than sharp streaks
- —Works on most hair types and base colours
- —Roots grow out softly, so clients typically need less frequent maintenance
Balayage vs highlights — what is the difference?
Traditional highlights are applied to precisely separated sections using foils, which creates uniform, defined colour throughout. Balayage is freehand and targeted at the surface of the hair, producing a softer, more natural result. Highlights tend to be more uniform and require more frequent touch-ups as the roots grow; balayage has a softer root line that blends better over time.
How long does balayage take?
Balayage is one of the longest hair colour appointments because the technique requires careful sectioning, hand-painting, and processing time. Expected durations:
- —Basic balayage on shorter hair: 2–2.5 hours
- —Full balayage on long or thick hair: 3–4 hours
- —Balayage with toner and blowdry: add 45–60 minutes
- —Balayage on dark hair requiring pre-lightening: 4+ hours
Balayage pricing UK
Balayage is priced as a premium colour service due to the time and skill required. UK pricing as of 2026:
- —Partial balayage (face frame, select sections): £80–150
- —Full balayage: £120–250 depending on hair length and location
- —London prices typically 30–50% higher than the national average
- —Toner and blowdry usually charged separately if not included
Why balayage appointments require accurate booking durations
A balayage appointment can run 3–4 hours — significantly longer than a standard cut. Hairdressers using booking software that does not support per-service durations will either block insufficient time (causing overruns and unhappy clients) or the same time for all colour services (wasting diary space). Nextro lets hairdressers set distinct durations for Balayage, Highlights, Cut and Blowdry, and any other service, so the right time is always reserved.
