What is a hair consultation?

A hair consultation is an assessment conversation between a hairdresser and a new or returning client to discuss the client's hair goals, evaluate the current condition of the hair, and agree on the best course of treatment or styling. Consultations happen before colour work, significant cuts, chemical treatments, and for new clients who have not been seen before.

Quick definition

Hair consultation = assessment to plan the service, check for contraindications, and set expectations

  • Required before colour work, chemical treatments, and first-time visits
  • Identifies if a patch test is needed before a colour appointment can proceed
  • Often free for new clients — may be charged for complex colour corrections
  • Can be offered as a bookable service in your booking system

Why hairdressers do consultations

A consultation protects both the hairdresser and the client. For the hairdresser, it identifies contraindications — previous chemical treatments, known sensitivities, or unrealistic expectations — that could result in a poor outcome or a complaint. For the client, it sets clear expectations about what is achievable in a single visit and what the maintenance requirements of a chosen style or colour will be.

  • Identifies if a patch test is needed before a colour appointment can proceed
  • Uncovers previous chemical history that may affect the colour result
  • Allows the hairdresser to manage client expectations before work begins
  • Required before significant colour changes — going from dark to light often takes multiple appointments
  • Gives the client an accurate price estimate before any commitment

What happens in a hair consultation

A typical consultation covers:

  • Discussion of the client's desired result — cut, colour, style
  • Visual and tactile assessment of the hair — texture, density, condition, previous treatments
  • Review of chemical history — relaxers, bleach, box dyes, other salon treatments
  • Patch test arrangement if a colour appointment is needed
  • Pricing and appointment duration estimate
  • Booking the follow-up service appointment

Do consultations cost money?

Many hairdressers offer initial consultations free of charge, particularly for colour clients. Some salons charge a small consultation fee that is credited against the service if the client proceeds. For complex colour corrections or significant style changes, a paid consultation is standard because the assessment itself takes time and expertise.

Consultation as a separate booking type

Offering consultations as a bookable appointment type solves a common problem: new colour clients who skip the patch test and then cannot proceed with their appointment on the day. When consultations are bookable online as a distinct service (typically 15–30 minutes), the hairdresser can ensure patch tests happen with enough lead time. Nextro allows hairdressers to list a consultation as a zero-price or low-cost service with its own duration.

Consultation for colour corrections

Colour corrections — fixing a previous colour that has gone wrong — almost always require an in-person consultation before any work begins. The outcome of a correction depends heavily on the existing colour, the chemical history of the hair, and the condition of the strands. A hairdresser cannot quote accurately for a colour correction without seeing the hair in person. For this reason, many hairdressers require colour correction clients to book a consultation before a main service appointment is offered.
